The CominLabs build on their following areas of excellence:

  • Electronic devices for modulation and coding, reconfigurable micro-architectures for signal processing;
  • Microwaves devices using anisotropic and heterogeneous materials, antennas;
  • Optical components for Communications, ultra high speed WDM signal processing;

On-line massive interaction over the Web using multimedia is developing much more rapidly than expected. Two major challenges result: How to achieve this without killing network capacity? How to make massive multimedia amenable of information retrieval?

The CominLabs will contribute to this move by developing breakthrough concepts and applications in which new devices will be deployed with monitoring purposes and new services will be offered to improve daily efficiency of medical services.

Neural coding

This project aims to identify clearly, deepen and exploit the strong analogies [distributed structure and message passing, storage capacity, discrimination ability, resilience, importance of cycles and correlation, etc.] that can be found between the structures and properties of the cerebral cortex and those of modern error correcting decoders.

Energy and resource efficiency in ICT

Information and Communication Technology [ICT] represents 2% of global CO2 emissions, corresponding roughly to 3% of the global energy, and could be one of the biggest greenhouse gas emitters by 2020. Out of this 3% of the global energy, most of the power consumption arises from access and home networks, and particularly from the wireless access segment. The CominLabs will contribute to reducing energy footprint in ICT by building on its areas of excellence.

The social Web is a domain at the crossing of many areas such as networks, distributed systems and algorithms, information retrieval, data representation, security, social sciences as well as economics. The CominLabs will develop user centric infrastructures supporting privacy and allowing for personalized interaction.

Security and privacy in the future Internet will be a multi-faceted topic that will need to reexamine security issues of communication, software and content, and where skills in a variety of fields including operating systems, distributed algorithms, theory of information are required.
